I have a mare that has some of the same bloodlines as the QH that have been tested positive for the silver. Can any one tell me if they think my mare is silver sorrel. EVEN though I do realize the silver gene is not suppose to effect the sorrel color.....
Sorry unable to figure out how to post a photo..... please e-mail me and I will send a photo mellissa701@aol.com

Welcome to the forum!

I can show you TONS of chestnuts with no chance of silver that are all sorts of strange. Laughing Silver only effects eumelanin and chestnuts can not produce eumelanin. There is debate about whether things that aren't really pigment controlled could be effected like hooves and eyes, but the jury is still out. You should see zero effect on mane, tail and body color.

Posting photos would be helpful as we might be able to explain some of the things you're seeing.

Also her pedigree might help as we know the specific lines the silver comes from and we might be able to rule it in or out.

Testing for red factor is unnecessary unless you think there is a chance she's actually a bay silver instead of a chestnut. What color are her parents?

You can upload a photo straight to this forum by clicking on the Polaroid photo with the floppy disk in front of it on the menu above. If you feel like counting it's the 15th icon above the text area when you are in the reply.

From what I can see, she is the reverse of silver. The roots of a silver mane and tail will be dark with the tips lighter. Hers is the other way around. This is typical of mild flaxen or flaxen with sooty. Her body color looks normal chestnut to me. I personally would just have called her a flaxen chestnut, but I'm always curious to see test results. I feel certain she will test 'ee' though.
